Artist Statement
When we create a new work, sometimes we forget about where the movements come from. The body is the voice which to process and express our life experiences. In the words of Pina Bausch, “ you have to believe that dance is something other than technique. They are born from life. When you create a new work, the point of departure must be contemporary life.”
My work is rooted in a range of movement styles including traditional modern, contemporary, Chinese Folk, ballet and improvisation. I find inspiration in the alchemy of collaboration with musician, visual artists, filmmakers, designers, dancers and my daily trivial living experiences. I love to exam the gestural relationship between physicality movements and mind focus. What kind of image is evoked from our inner self and what type of life style reflect in our authentic body voice? I apply those questions to test out through the solo, duet, trio and quartet.
My choreography usually has strong emotional texture behind. We know contemporary dance usually is pretty abstract but if the audience can affect by movements that will become the greatest value.
When I create the movement, I usually set up an internal story for each characters or sections. I like to use improvisation as the first day to break ice and observe my dancers uniqueness. During the rehearsal process, my dancers and I work collaboratively with the movements and explore any possibilities. I found the greatest value, which come from all my collaborators.
My work reflects my life. I give vent to lots of my inner voice in my choreography that I normally will not express to others. I also seek to push the boundaries of traditional performance bring dance into community such as coffee shop, gallery, public park, window display, hall way but not limit on the stage. Dance is not just for artists but also for everyone, every moment!
